Drew Holcomb Greenville Concert reviews
Winchester's Proud Night
It was an incredible debut as the dedication of the newly renovated Handley High School's Patsy Cline Auditorium! We're extremely grateful that Drew Holcomb agreed to come. I hope that the out-of-towners, who were not aware that they would be viewing a high school performance, weren't too disappointed. The High School's Hilltop Singers gave an impressive performance and can always brag that they once opened for Drew.
The harmonica player was outstanding, as well, filling in the parts of several more instruments. The 6 performers (and a young boy assisting with percussion) gave a solid performance, giving the audience a dose of all his classics from over his almost 50 years of hits. From "Crazy" (the one everyone came to hear) to "Whiskey for My Men," they touched on everyone's favorite. It was an intimate venue and such a simple set to experience an American Legend.
He converted his old beat-up acoustic guitar into so many instruments played in so many styles, from classical, rock, blues, jazz, old-timey gospel, country-western and that locomotive percussion style reminiscent of Johnny Cash. Then there were moments, like when Drew played Django Reinhardt's "Nuages" or Ray Price's version of "Night Life" that you could see him shine. Drew and his band showed off their talents, even though, at times, they played with the enthusiasm of just another day at the job.
But hey, it was a night this little town will never forget. I was disappointed that he played only the minimum 90 minutes and didn't play an encore. Nor did he show for the reception afterward. Thanks for coming, Drew.
